Editorial Review Late at night, Shah Jahan was summoned to the tent where his beloved wife Mumtaz lay dying. With tears in her eyes the empress whispered to the emperor to build a monument symbolising the sublime beauty of their love. Mumtaz died while Shah Jahan gazed into her eyes.
